Flip Merwin Memorial 75 Lap Feature Headlines Night

Wausau, WI June 20th, 2010 – After a year hiatus the Flip Merwin Snowmobile Race returns to State Park Speedway. Merwin, an up and coming snowmobile racer, lost his life in January 2003 at the World Snowmobile Championships in Eagle River. Each year since, with the exception of 2009, State Park Speedway honored Merwin with a memorial race, something the Wimmer’s are happy to have return to their track. “Flip was my best friend,” says State Park Speedway Owner Scott Wimmer, “I’ve gotten a chance to race in the Flip race, but when my Dad and I bought the track, bringing back this race was something that was very important to both of us. Flip was a huge part of my life and we are honored to be able to have this race and remember him.”

“Bringing the Flip Race back to Wausau was something we talked about right when we bought the track,” says Owner Ron Wimmer, “I spent a lot of time with Flip while he was growing up and was sad to see that there was not a Flip Merwin Memorial Race last year. This night is special for the Merwin family and our family and we are proud to bring it back to State Park Speedway.”

In honor of Flip Merwin and his passion for snowmobiling a handful of local snowmobile races will be on hand, including 2010 World Champion Matt Schultz and Wausau 525 winner P.J. Wandershield. An autograph session will be held from 6:15 until racing begins and many sleds will be on display throughout the night.

The super late model division highlights the night with a 75-lap feature. After two four tire race, this marks the first of five consecutive nights where drivers can purchase just two new tires to race on. Along with the pure stock division, sportsman division, and mini-mod division, State Park Speedway is excited to welcome the Central Wisconsin Super Stock Association to the ¼ mile track for the night. With five different divisions, fans will see a great night of racing!

For more information or the Flip Merwin Memorial place contact Jana Jurkovich at stateparkspeedway@yahoo.com. For more information on State Park Speedway please visit www.stateparkspeedway.com.

Chris Weinkauf served notice Memorial Day when he won the Wisconsin Challenge Series (WCS) 100 lap event by a big margin at Golden Sands Speedway. Chris posted fast time over a field of cars that included Steve Holzhausen and Jeremy Lepak, who raced closely for over 50 laps behind Weinkauf for 2nd and 3rd. Only 1 caution marred the race, when Eugene Gregorich and Jeff Weinfurter both spun early. Weinkauf started 11th and wasted no time getting to the front, leading after the 25th lap.

Holzhausen’s usual steady march to the front brought Lepak with him, and the two looked to be the only others capable of matching Weinkauf’s speed. The Checkered lap saw Weinkauf clearing lapped traffic, leading by about a dozen car lengths, Holzhausen and Lepak nose to tail. Bryan Reffner and new standout Skylar Holzhausen maintained top 5 positions all race long to finish 4th and 5th. The race was a family affair, with Father and son Steve and Skylar finishing in the top 5, and Bryan Reffner and his nephew Colin also competing in the feature.
